I got to know Irvine Welsh, author of Trainspotting, in 1995, when I was producing writers' events in San Francisco at a bar. The first Irvine reading pulled in 30 people. Two years later, hundreds would be lining up to hear him read in the same bar after Trainspotting had swept across the publishing and cinema world.
In the summer of '95 I legged it to Amsterdam to meet Irvine and arrange for the stage play version of Trainspotting to be produced in San Francisco, the US Stage Premiere. The show opened in February 1996. It was a ferocious four-month run. All who saw it and all who were involved in its production have not forgotten its impact.
